Digifort License Plate Recognition:

Smart, Fast, & Accurate

Managing vehicle traffic, controlling parking access, or tracking suspicious activity across highways used to require manual work or multiple systems. Not anymore. With Digifort’s advanced License Plate Recognition (LPR), you get real-time vehicle identification, intelligent event handling, and integration with external databases, all within one centralised security platform.

But what does this mean in practice for the Baltic and Nordic markets?

For organisations operating transport infrastructure, logistics sites, parking facilities, industrial premises or multi-site security systems, the value of LPR is not simply in reading a number plate. The real value comes from turning that plate into an actionable event, and connecting it with the rest of the security system.

What is Digifort LPR?

Digifort’s LPR module uses OCR-based license plate recognition to identify vehicles and store plate information for search and further action. Recognised plates can be associated with system events, alarms, access control and external databases.

This makes LPR relevant not only for dedicated traffic enforcement, but also for controlled access, parking, logistics and security operations.

Key Capabilities

Real-Time Recognition at High Speeds

Digifort Global specifies LPR applications for high-speed environments, with highway applications up to 250 km/h. Actual recognition performance remains dependent on the camera and the overall system design. This is particularly relevant for the Baltic region, where one solution may need to cover very different environments, from controlled entrances and logistics yards to major roads and urban traffic.

MMC Analysis: Make, Model, Colour

LPR can provide additional vehicle attributes such as make, model and colour, adding another layer of information to a plate-based event. For security teams, this can be useful when the plate itself is not enough to identify the vehicle being searched for.

Multi-Lane Coverage & Direction Detection

Digifort supports ROI configuration and simultaneous multi-lane recognition, as well as event logic around zones and vehicle movement. This opens applications beyond a single gate: entrances and exits, parking areas, road approaches and controlled traffic zones can all be managed within the same VMS environment.

External Database Integration

One of the more important capabilities for enterprise projects is the ability to connect LPR data with external systems. Digifort supports LPR Bridge functionality for querying external databases and third-party systems and retrieving information from recognised plates in real time.

In practice, this can support integrations with:

  • parking and permit databases;
  • access control systems;
  • internal vehicle databases;
  • logistics or fleet systems;
  • law-enforcement or other authorised external databases, where legally permitted.

This is where LPR moves from a standalone camera function to part of a wider security workflow.

From Reading Plates to Taking Action

A useful LPR system should not stop at displaying a registration number. Digifort can associate recognised plates with events and automatically trigger actions, for example, opening a barrier for an authorised vehicle, generating an alarm for a vehicle on a watchlist, or sending plate data to another system.

The result is a workflow where: vehicle → plate → database → event → action

rather than simply: vehicle → camera recording

Route Trace and Speed Detection

Digifort can calculate vehicle speed between defined points and generate events based on configured speed conditions. Its Vehicle Trace functionality can also search for a plate and follow its path across multiple camera points.

For distributed sites, this is especially relevant when the question is not simply “Who entered?”, but “Where did this vehicle go afterwards?”

Why This Matters in the Baltics

The Baltic market already has practical examples of large-scale transport and city-security environments built around Digifort VMS.

Digifort is already being used in real-world transport infrastructure projects on the Latvian market. Rīgas satiksme uses Digifort in its public transport video system, and in 2026, market research was carried out regarding the purchase of additional Digifort software licences for public transport vehicles. This example clearly demonstrates that centralised video management has practical applications even in large and dispersed transport infrastructure systems. A similar approach may also be relevant in other projects where vehicle identification needs to be integrated with video surveillance, access control and automated security events.

In Lithuania, public documentation also records Digifort as the VMS used in Vilnius' traffic management centre. The system was part of the city's traffic management infrastructure, where continuity and rapid technical response were important requirements.

More recently, a 2026 Lithuanian market consultation for AI video analytics specified integration with an existing Digifort Enterprise environment and included traffic-flow analysis, vehicle classification, congestion, accidents and illegal parking detection.

These examples point to an important regional trend: transport video is increasingly expected to provide operational data, not only recordings. That is also where LPR can add value, especially when vehicle identification needs to be connected to access, parking, logistics or incident-management workflows.

What About Finland?

For Finland, the same technology is relevant to a somewhat different operational context: parking management, logistics, industrial sites, controlled-access facilities and distributed infrastructure.

However, publicly available sources do not provide a sufficiently verified Digifort LPR customer case in Finland to name a specific organisation here. Rather than presenting an unverified reference, the relevant point is the platform capability itself: Digifort LPR supports external database integration, vehicle trace, multi-lane recognition, speed calculation and event-based automation.

For Finnish projects, as for the Baltic market, the system architecture and legal basis for processing vehicle data should be considered as part of the project design, not as an afterthought.

LPR in the EU: The Data Question Matters

License plate recognition is not only a technical question. The European Data Protection Board specifically notes that video systems can process personal data and that license plates can fall within the scope of GDPR when they can be related to an identifiable person. Organisations need to consider the purpose, legal basis, transparency, data minimisation and storage period when deploying such systems.

That makes system architecture particularly important in the Baltic and Nordic markets. A successful LPR project needs to answer two questions at the same time:

Can the system technically identify the vehicle? and - Is the collected information being processed for a clearly defined and legally justified purpose?

Ideal Digifort Use Cases

Digifort LPR can be considered for:

  • Corporate and industrial sites - controlled vehicle access and visitor management;
  • Logistics centres - vehicle identification at gates and movement tracking;
  • Parking facilities - permit verification, entry/exit management and dwell-time monitoring;
  • Transport infrastructure - vehicle flow and event monitoring;
  • Critical infrastructure - controlled access and vehicle watchlists;
  • Multi-site organisations - centralised vehicle search and event management across multiple locations.

Why Integrate LPR into the VMS?

A separate LPR system can identify a plate. A VMS-integrated LPR solution can connect that identification with video, alarms, access control and other security events. Digifort's architecture supports this approach by combining LPR with its broader VMS/ISMS functionality and third-party integrations.

For Baltic and Nordic integrators, that creates a practical opportunity: instead of designing LPR as an isolated subsystem, vehicle data can become another operational layer within the customer's existing security platform.

From a Number Plate to an Actionable Event

The most important question when evaluating LPR is therefore not simply: “Can it read the plate?”

It is: “What should happen after the plate is read?”

That is where integration, automation, database connectivity and the wider VMS architecture determine the real value of an LPR solution. Digifort LPR combines these capabilities in one platform, from vehicle identification and search to database integration, route trace, speed calculation and event-based automation.
